About This Site

Top Dog Joint Health Guide publishes first-person reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on dog joint supplements and everyday mobility aids, including glucosamine chews, omega-3 fish oil, green-lipped mussel chews, hip slings and non-slip socks. It is written by a retired PE and health teacher, not a veterinarian, and nothing here replaces your own vet's advice.

Dog Health Safety

Nothing on this site is veterinary advice. Limping, stiffness, trouble rising or a sudden change in how a dog moves can come from arthritis, but also from injury, spinal disease, infection or cancer. Have a veterinarian examine your dog before you start any supplement, and tell them everything your dog already takes.

Supplements are not medicines and are not approved to treat, cure or prevent any disease. Follow the label for your dog's weight and never give a human product. Joint chews and fish oil can upset the stomach, fish oil can affect blood clotting, and some products contain shellfish or other allergens. Ask your vet first if your dog is on anti-inflammatories or blood thinners, has diabetes, pancreatitis or a bleeding disorder, is pregnant, or has surgery coming. Stop and call your vet if you see vomiting, diarrhea, itching, facial swelling or lethargy, and keep chews out of reach, since dogs can overeat a whole bottle.

Lift slings can hurt a dog, or you, if used badly. Lift with your legs, do not hoist a dog that cries out, and check for rubbing under the belly and groin. Non-slip socks can cut off circulation if fastened too tightly, can be chewed and swallowed, and should come off for sleep. Check paws and skin every day.
